Being a Better Person
Clayton Christensen died this week. I feel a need to write a personal post as my tribute to him.
“The Innovator’s Dilemma” as a book from assigned MBA reading list of management literature was unexpectedly inspirational and eye-opening for me.
A natural interest in his work lead me to his essay “How Will You Measure Your Life?”, the main idea of this HBR article was around everyday personal choices and their impact on our lives.
I did my MBA in 2013; it was a well-planned step in my life, as well as a necessary part of my immigration to Germany. The year at the MBA program was sabbatical for me. I started working at 20, loved my job very much, being workaholic by nature and changing my employers quickly when I needed more challenge, career boost, or more money. I was mainly focused on “marginal profit” of the next step I take in my life. But a lot of things were off. I was a divorced 30-year old immigrant after ten years of rapid growth up the corporate ladder, finally able to breathe in, it was still “not enough,” and something fundamental was missing.
Christensen’s view of the universe was so right to the point and in unison with me at that moment of life. It raised many questions and gave opportunities to think about my way, what I was going to do with my life…
